Event Description

The Minneapolis Aquatennial, often celebrated as the "Best Days of Summer," is the city’s official civic celebration running from July 18 to July 26, 2026. This massive nine-day summer festival brings communities together across downtown Minneapolis, the Mississippi Riverfront, and local parks, and is now entering its 87th year under the fresh leadership of the Aquatennial Ambassador Organization. If you are looking for free family-friendly things to do in Minneapolis this summer, the Aquatennial offers an unforgettable lineup of parades, water sports, and world-class fireworks. While the festival spans over a week, several signature events draw the largest crowds, starting with the Twin Cities Beach Blast and water events on opening weekend, Sunday, July 19, at Bde Maka Ska’s Thomas Beach and North Beach. This opening celebration kicks off with Minnesota's lake culture, featuring sandcastle sculptures, the Floating Lanterns and Night Market from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Saturday, July 18, and free sailing trials at the Minneapolis Sailing Center. The festival continues into the week with the unique Summer Snowball Classic at The Commons Park on Tuesday, July 21, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Wednesday, July 22, is a peak night for attendance, starting at 7:00 PM with the Twin Cities River Rats Waterski Show at 1758 West River Road North on the Mississippi River, featuring high-flying stunts, human pyramids, and family-friendly comedy. Immediately following at 7:30 PM, the historic Aquatennial Torchlight Parade floods Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis with illuminated floats, precision marching bands, and local dance teams as the premier nighttime parade in the Midwest. On Thursday, July 23, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, downtown visitors can enjoy Summer Showtunes with Hennepin Arts at 10th and Nicollet, while Friday, July 24, brings sports fans downtown for Aqua Night with the Minnesota Twins at Target Field at 7:10 PM. The festival culminates in a massive grand finale on Saturday, July 25, which features the Loring Park Art Festival and Carifest along the riverfront all day long, and concludes at 10:00 PM with the legendary Target Fireworks Grand Finale along the Mississippi Riverfront near the Stone Arch Bridge and West River Parkway. The Target Fireworks fill the night sky with a choreographed pyrotechnic masterpiece that ranks as one of the top five largest fireworks displays in the country, drawing tens of thousands to the riverbanks. Because the festival takes place across multiple neighborhoods, a little strategy goes a long way to optimize your experience. Downtown parking fills up quickly during the major events, so utilizing the Metro Transit Light Rail Blue or Green lines to drop off right in the heart of downtown or near the riverfront is highly recommended to bypass traffic. For the best fireworks viewing spots, look to local patio restaurants and rooftop bars along the Mississippi River which offer excellent vantage points, but remember to book reservations weeks in advance if you want a table with a view. Combining events on the final Saturday allows you to plan a full-day itinerary exploring local art vendors and grabbing food at Twin Cities food trucks before ending the evening by the river. Best of all, keeping it budget-friendly is simple, as nearly 90% of the core events, including the beach blast, the parade, the ski shows, and the grand finale fireworks, are completely free to attend, making it one of the most accessible summer festivals in Minnesota.
